A Homeschooling/Unschooling Exploratory Experience Children Explore, Discover, Observe, Analyze, & Document
“Imagine if every teacher taught nature journaling, every student spent enough time outside to fill a journal each year, and our kids were becoming writers, artists, and scientists all at once. I’d send my kid to that school.” —Craig Strang, Associate Director, Lawrence Hall of Science

LOCATION: New London County. Dream Rangers Forest School will consist of an in depth creative and scientific study of Mystic Country, Long Island Sound, The Last Green Valley, and Local Tribal Reservations.
Proposed locations to include: Harkness Park, Waterford. Ocean Beach, New London. Fort Trumbull New London. New London Waterfront Park and Maritime Museum. Fort Shantok, Uncasville. Mohegan Park, Norwich. Mashantucket Pequot Museum, Ledyard. Mystic Seaport. Mystic Aquarium. Denison Pequot Nature Center, Mystic. Esker Point, Groton. Bluff Point Groton. Avery Point Groton.
Please Note: I would like to start the semester with a week long study at Harkness Park but this location will depend on transportation needs and wavers. The hope is that we can get on a Project Oceanology boat tour at Avery Point for the last week of camp, this will depend on enrollment numbers. If these two locations fall into place and parents are interested the school could go to 14 weeks. I’d also like to end each semester with the creation of a Painted Mural depicting everything the students have learned, location for the mural to be determined. All other locations have been approved.
Parents will need to supply the following:
Weather appropriate clothing. Comfortable closed toed waterproof hiking shoes, i.e. crocs/rain/garden boots. Hats or sunglasses if sensitive to the sun. Light comfortable backpack. Forest schools are held rain or shine so please dress children appropriately and in layers if necessary.
Small towel. Swimming is not permitted at Forest School but we will get wet.
Hearty Snack and Water Bottle. Please feed children a healthy hearty breakfast or lunch before drop off and be prepared to feed lunch or dinner after pickup. Children are not permitted to eat a full meal of breakfast, lunch, or dinner during Forest School as this falls under a separate licensing. Please pack a protein packed snack with veggies and fruit. Snacks are allowed but we recommend dye free, preservative free snacks for an optimal and cooperative learning experience. If you would like to allow your child to purchase icecream or something similar if our location for the day offers a concession stand or ice cream truck I will send a waiver.
Bug Spray and Sun Screen; apply beforehand and pack.
Cameras are encouraged. Phones with cameras are encouraged. Communicating with parents is encouraged. However, texting friends, playing video games, scrolling social media and checking emails is discouraged.
Once registration forms are received handbooks and waiver forms will be sent out. Once the signed waivers are received invoices will be sent.
LEARN MORE – FOREST SCHOOLS IN THE MEDIA
PLEASE NOTE: I strongly recommended watching the videos below that highlight Forest Schools in the media. However, while it’s true my children were allowed to use knives and matches responsibly, please keep in mind that we are here in conservative Connecticut. So let’s not get crazy, just yet anyway. For now we will leave knives, saws, and matches at home in the garage with fathers and grandfathers wink wink. You can imagine our New England children searching for nature’s treasures, making scientific observations, creating field guides, and painting landscapes. Also these videos represent traditional hard chore Forest Schools. There are also Beach Forest Schools and Urban Forest Schools. Here in New London County our biodiversity includes all three, Beaches, Urban Settings, and Forests, therefore we will be discovering all three during our time together. Also many of the schools represented maintain a culture where the students explore the same location every day. Dream School’s Forest Rangers Forest School will be a Traveling Nomad Forest School where we explore different locations throughout the semester. Since all locations are still in our home county we will still be maintaining the theme of our New London County, Connecticut Environment. The common denominator in all Forest Schools is that the classroom is located outside. Also something not mentioned in the videos is that in some Forest School locations outdoor toileting would be required. However, Dream School has chosen locations with working or portable facilities at this time and will not use locations without facilities unless approved by parents.
Thank you for choosing Dream Rangers Forest School!
Dream School is a Homeschool, Unshool, Forest School, Private School Culture. Therefore vaccines are not required. Please keep this in mind before enrolling your students.

Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!
Sharks of the sea and fish in the lakes,
lizards, frogs, turtles, and snakes.
A ship on the sea, a trek through the moats,
horses, cows, pigs, and goats.
A tractor on a farm or riding horseback,
I hope you know I packed you a snack.
Elephants, giraffes, lions and rhinos,
It doesn’t matter where you go.
In a jeep on safari, around a mountain with me,
or alone on an adventure to be free.
Koalas, kangaroos, and platypi.
Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!
A walkabout or a forest hike,
don’t go too far without your bike.
Penguins, polar bears, seals, and reindeer,
I hope you don’t forget, I am not far but near.
Even if your on a sled in the snow,
this I hope you will always know.
